What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy has evolved from Osteopathy and uses gentle touch to help the body to release tensions and held patterns to create a greater sense of ease and well-being.

The body has an innate ability to heal and balance itself and Craniosacral Therapy taps into this potential and supports your body in this process.  Stress, held in the system, can often be released, creating more balance in the body. Often clients report that they feel more connected to themselves and their inner resources after a session or that they feel calmer.

What happends during a treatment?

During a treatment, you will usually lie on your back on a treatment couch. However, in later stages of pregnancy, treatments can be done in the sitting position or lying on the side.  Clothes do not need to be removed. The practitioner will use very gentle touch to listen to your body, encouraging your body to relax and begin to make the changes it needs. Practitioners usually work with all areas between the head (cranium ) and the sacrum, the lower part of the spine. But often, the whole body is involved in the treatment as the body functions as a whole.

Who is it for?

CST is a very gentle therapy and is suitable for everyone from newly-born babies to the elderly. As it is about listening to the body via soft touch, the practitioner adjusts the treatment to each individual and their needs.

Craniosacral Therapy for babies

Craniosacral Therapy has become well known for helping babies, in particular after a difficult birth. During the birth process, different areas of the body might become compressed, in particular the bones of the head and the neck area. This might be followed by a restriction in the blood flow to and from the brain or a pressure on nerves traveling through these areas. It is thought that this, together with the stress of a difficult birth, can affect particular nerves and nerve centres responsible for the proper functioning of our internal organs, particularly the lungs and digestive system. This might be followed by colic, sucking problems, breathing difficulties, restlessness and irritability.

Craniosacral Therapy aims to help to release these tensions and compressions to allow a better functioning of the system.

What can it help with?
