What is sports & remedial massage?

Sports and Remedial Massage is a style of specialised massage techniques for the treatment of the soft tissues of our bodies, including our muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Used to target the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries, it is a safe and effective massage treatment which can benefit anyone — people of all ages and conditions.

Sports and Remedial Massage works by targeting specific muscles, softening the hardened tissue to restore movement, ease tightness and restriction, mobility, and reduce pain. 

A typical session

A typical sports and remedial massage session will begin with a thorough assessment – going through your past history of injuries, assessing your posture, and assessing your current range of movement to get a better understanding of what is causing your issues.

Once our therapists are able to diagnose the source of your pain or injury, massage techniques are used to rehabilitate. Treatment is then done on the massage table and lasts 60 minutes.

What is Ayurvedic Yoga massage?

Developed by Master Kusum Modak in Pune, Ayurvedic Yoga massage is a head to toe, holistic treatment, performed on the floor mat, that helps realign the body and stimulates the natural flow of energy as well as brings about a deeper body awareness to the clients. It brings the world of ayurvedic massage and yoga together creating a multi-faceted treatment.

Working on the floor not only allows for a free range of movement and helps with the flow of the treatment but it also gives clients a sense of security and sense of feeling grounded allowing for a deeper relaxation.

A typical session

The treatment starts with deep tissue oil massage where a therapist uses hands as well as feet to warm up the muscles, soft tissues and organs whilst facilitating breathing and improving the body’s circulation. A blend of natural oil and topical ayurvedic herb – calamus – is used throughout the treatment. The use of this root creates a pleasant exfoliating feeling, but more importantly helps with blood circulation, brings toxins out of the body and acts as nerve tonic.

The next stage (or phase) of the treatment is when assisted yoga stretches and gentle mobilisations are used to help lengthen the tissues, relax tendons and ligaments and aid renewal of the synovial fluid in the joints. All the work is accompanied by coordinated breathwork, which helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leaving the receiver feeling deeply relaxed.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a manual treatment rooted in the tradition of Oriental massage and originated in Japan. As its name suggests, composed of “Shi” for finger and “Atsu” for pressure, it is an acupressure technique without the manipulations, rubbing, and kneading typical of a “classic” massage. Unlike the latter, Shiatsu does not aim for aesthetic or physiotherapeutic improvement but rather focuses on restoring the person’s emotional and physiological balance, creating an experience capable of engaging the senses, emotions, and spirit.

Shiatsu sessions typically unfold on a futon mattress placed on the floor, ensuring a comfortable environment for clients’ holistic experiences. Sessions can last between 60 to 90 minutes, with the initial appointments allowing additional time for comprehensive case history discussions.

Active participation and feedback from clients are highly valued throughout and after their Shiatsu treatments. Clients are encouraged to express their preferences during the sessions; whether something feels soothing or requires adjustment, their voices guide the experiences. Shiatsu sessions are tailored to specific needs, addressing the entire body rather than focusing solely on specific areas of concern. Techniques employed aim to enhance the flow of Qi (energy), offering a blend of invigorating and relaxing approaches. This may involve assisted joint stretching and sustained manipulation, ranging from gentle pressure to more intense sensations, always prioritizing safety.

Various techniques, including thumb and finger pressure, as well as the use of elbows, knees, and feet, are applied to specific meridians and acupuncture points. Post-sessions, clients have tranquil moments to rest, followed by brief discussions about their experiences and the practitioner’s observations. The effects of Shiatsu treatments are often immediate, leaving clients feeling relaxed and energised. Some experience a delayed “wave of relaxation” hours after leaving the session. While a single treatment benefits everyone, a series of sessions is recommended for optimal results, given Shiatsu’s cumulative effects.

The frequency of sessions varies for each individual, as Shiatsu is not a quick fix. Chronic conditions may require more time for resolution, highlighting the importance of a tailored and comprehensive approach to their well-being.
